Child safety standards

Wanderist has zero tolerance for child sexual abuse and exploitation (CSAE). This page sets out what is prohibited, what we do when we find it, and how to tell us. It applies to everything on Wanderist: profiles, Outings, photos, chats and anything else a member posts or sends.

Wanderist is for adults

You must be 18 or older to use Wanderist. We ask for your date of birth before your profile exists, and the app will not create a profile for anyone under 18. If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 18, we remove it. If you believe a child has an account, report it as described below.

What is prohibited

Members must not post, send, request, link to or arrange any of the following, on Wanderist or through anything they arranged on it:

  • Child sexual abuse material (CSAM): any image, video or other depiction of a minor in sexually explicit conduct, including drawn, edited or computer-generated material.
  • Content that sexualises a minor, in any form, including text.
  • Grooming: building contact or trust with a minor in order to abuse or exploit them.
  • Seeking contact with a minor for any sexual purpose, including arranging to meet one, online or in person.
  • Sextortion: threatening to share sexual images of a minor, or pressuring a minor to produce them.
  • Trafficking or the commercial sexual exploitation of a minor.

There are no exceptions for fiction, art, humour or claims of consent. These rules sit alongside our terms of service, which also prohibit sexual solicitation of anyone.

What we do

  • We remove it. As soon as we know of material that breaks these standards, we take it down.
  • We suspend the account. Suspension disables the account and signs it out everywhere. Any upcoming Outings it hosts are cancelled, and its pending requests to join others are withdrawn. A person whose account we remove may not create another.
  • We report it. We report apparent child sexual abuse material to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) through its CyberTipline, as US federal law requires. We preserve what the law requires us to keep, and we cooperate with law enforcement.
  • We keep the report. A report stays on record even if the person who filed it, or the person it is about, deletes their account. Otherwise anyone could erase the evidence of their own behaviour by deleting their account.

Some screening is automatic: Outing cover photos are checked by Google Cloud Vision when they are uploaded, and a photo someone reports is checked again. Every report is also read by a person.

How to report it

In the app. Use Report on the person's profile, on the Outing, or on the photo in an Outing's album, and choose Safety concern. To report a message in a chat, report the person who sent it and say what happened. A report alerts our team straight away. You can also Block the person, and you won't see each other's Outings.

By email. Write to support@wanderist.io with "Child safety" in the subject. Say where the content is: the person's name, the Outing, or the chat.

Do not copy, screenshot or forward abuse material, even to us. Possessing or sending it is a crime, even with good intentions. Tell us where it is and we will take it from there.

If a child is in immediate danger, call 911 (or your local emergency number) before anything else. You can also report child sexual exploitation directly to NCMEC at report.cybertip.org or 1-800-843-5678. Outside the United States, contact your local police.
